Community Attends DAN's "New Beginning"
Event

More than 160 Springfield area residents
joined the Dog Adoption Network's "New Beginning" meeting at the newly
completed Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center on Cottage
St. in Springield, MA. This state of the art animal shelter was built
by the City of Springfield at a cost of $3.9 million dollars.

Visiting animal lovers were treated to
coffee, cake and other breakfast treats. Live musical entertainment
was provided by Bob and Sarah from the "Shining Light". Open tours of
the twenty thousand foot animal shelter were provided by DAN representatives.
At a special DAN meeting held at the
shelter's community room, DAN's co-founder, Linda Antoniucci, stated
that the DAN "Shelter Fund" raised more than $7500.00 from which veterinarian
equipment and supplies, community room furniture and grooming equipment
were purchased. PETCO managers, Larry and Lori, from the Enfield, CT
and the Holyoke, MA, stores offered words of support for the new shelter
and presented a $1,000.00 check from the PETCO foundation.
Special recognition awards were given
to two members of the Board of Supervisors that run the regional shelter.
Chicopee Alderman at Large, James Tillotson who served on both the Advisory
Board of the shelter and the Shelter Search Committee was thanked for
his efforts. Chairman Thomas Haberlin was recognized as the man that
made it happen by chairing the Shelter Committee and finding the builder
and the funds for the facility.

A quilt donated by Carol Armour was raffled
off and the proceeds were used to pay for food expenses of the meeting.
The winner of the raffle was Linda McLauren.
Dr. Dean, President of the Dog Adoption
Network, thanked members of the event committee: Mark Risner, Carol
Armour, Bob and Roxanne Hicks and Ron and Darlene Atkinson.
