Animals Get a Second Chance Because of a
First Class Woman
You
can hear the passion as the Director of the Second Chance Animal Shelter
described her efforts in building the new Second Chance Animal Shelter
in East Brookfield, Massachusetts. Sheryl Parker, started in the early
1990's, as an animal control officer for the Town of East Brookfield.
Not wanting to euthanaise the adoptable animals she apprehended, she
traveled more than an hour and a half to the closest no- kill facility
in order to save their lives. Wanting a local no kill shelter to be
built in her town, and encouraged by many friends, Sheryl started fund
raising. One particular auction raised over $10,000.00.
After
securing 2.2 acres of land in town, many members of the community helped
Sheryl over the next three years to build the shelter that exists today.
Sheryl wanted to personally thank R&L Construction of Warren, MA
and R. Barnes Landscaping for their free labor and the Olsons for donating
the land. She also thanks Westwellswebworks for maintaining their website.
The shelter has fourteen dog runs, a medical suite for spaying/neutering
and a twelve cage cat adoption room (and there are about 30 cats in
foster care). Diane Doherty is the cat coordinator.
Thanks to the efforts of Sheryl and animal lovers in the East Brookfield
community, more than 350 dogs and cats a year have a second chance
at a new life through adoption.
