Canines with Courage

Gus & Amo ready to rollFor most of us, watching the terrorist attack at The World Trade Center unfold on television September 11th, it was time to sit down and try to comprehend what we were witnessing. For Fred Golba, a professional Rescue Volunteer, it was time for him and his two dogs to spring into action. By 6:30 p.m., the night of the tragedy Fred, his dogs "Gus" and "Amo", had traveled over 130 miles and were now standing on what we have come to know as GROUND ZERO.

Fred is Executive Director of Tutor Service Dogs' Coast to Coast Search and Rescue department in Greenfield, MA. He and his specially trained dogs are no strangers to disasters or catastrophes. They participated with other recovery teams in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and most recently in India, following an earthquake.

Describing the scene in a phone interview with DAN, Fred stated that there were "no words invented that could describe the complete and total destruction" of the two buildings known as The World Trade Center.

Working his dogs on a rotating basis to avoid fatigue, Fred worked more than 86 hours straight without sleep. When both dogs were too tired to go on, he continued alone. Despite their best efforts his dogs Gus, a 4 year old Bloodhound, and Amo, an 8 year old German Shepherd, found no survivors after the 2nd day.

Working in the intense heat, dust and smoke took its toll on the 160 Rescue dogs these past two weeks. Cuts and bruises were common. Suffering from dehydration, Amo required two transfusions of fluids. Another rescue dog died of heat exhaustion.

The men, women and dogs that risked their lives to save others are true heroes.
