Attorney General Approves East Longmeadow Leash Law

Martylee CaramanteMartylee Caramante, dog officer for East Longmeadow started the campaign to outlaw the practice of chaining dogs for extended periods of time all day, every day over a year ago.

Calling her cell phone tonight to get an update on her efforts, Martylee was ecstatic that a week ago the Attorney General's office approved the leash law ordinance passed by the town of East Longmeadow. Its provisions state that an animal cannot be tethered outside for more than 6 hours a day and must have shelter. It further prohibits tying out a dog overnight. Martylee stated that she already enforced the town law by removing a dog that was tied on a lead during last weeks thunderstorm. The St. Bernard which had no shelter was very grateful to get out of the rain.

Congratulations to Martylee, her committee and the town of East Longmeadow for caring about their companion animals.

Chained Pet Needs New Home

Tanner - Looking for new homeTanner is AKC registered, neutered and UTD on all of his shots. He currently spends his life on an outside run. On the rare occasion that he is brought into the home (sub-freezing temperatures), he is put in the basement in his crate. Family has WISELY decided it's not fair for Tanner to be tied out all day.

Tanner is a good boy but he is EXUBERANT, to say the least. Any human interaction with him results in jumping, licking, pulling on his leash (if walking), etc. Therefore, he needs a refresher in manners but only because he CRAVES attention.

City Shelter Needs Continued Support

Approaching it's 3rd year of operation, The T.J. O'Connor Adoption Center, located in Springfield, MA serves Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke, West Springfield and other smaller towns. With both financial and adoption challenges ahead the public is encouraged to support our regional shelter in whatever way they can. Immediate needs are:

  • Blankets, towels and newspapers.
  • Volunteers to care for cats and dogs.
  • Permanent homes for dogs and lots of cats.

Long term goals include fundraising to help offset the shelter's financial deficit. This can be accomplished by direct charitable contributions to T.J. O'Connor Shelter and the establishment of financial endowments.
