Fred Golba and Amo

On May 6, 2000 Yankee Magazine honored a group of New Englanders in its second annual Community Partners Conference. The award recognized those whose service to their community is exemplary. Fred Golba of Chicopee was one of seven people honored.

Fred Golba with AmmoFred Golba is the Executive Director/Developer of the Search and Rescue Department for Tutor Service Dogs in Greenfield, MA. He and his purebred German Shepard, Amo, have helped find many people who have disappeared or are victims of natural disasters. Golba has studied forensics and pathology to help him as a tracker, being an experienced hunter also helps. He became interested in search in rescue in the early 1990s when he experienced the emotional return of two young children that he helped find after they had wandered into the woods.

He and Amo have had many successes in their trackings - including a test run in 1996 where they found the remains of a man that had disappeared 7 months earlier. Golba and Amo showed up and 5 1/2 hours later had found the man's remains 100 yards from the house from which he had disappeared.

Golba and Amo have had many successful "finds". The team has even traveled to other countries to help aid in the search and rescue/recovery of victims in natural disasters. In the Domincan Replubic he trained 8 search and rescue dogs for Dominican officials after helping find victims of Hurricane George.

Golba does not ask for or receive compensation for most of the work he does...he is a volunteer.
