Murphey
My best friend and I originally went to the pound that fateful Saturday to look for a dog to give to my boyfriend's father. When we both fell in love with a seven month old pit bull-yellow lab mix, we were filled with uncertainty. Only the day before, Andy had complained about how he thought dogs like pit bulls and boxers were UGLY and he listened to his father when he said that pit bulls had nasty dispositions and could turn on you at any time! Well, we put the dog on hold for a couple of days with the plan to go back on Monday to show him our find.
All day Sunday was spent looking up information on pit bulls in the attempt to persuade everyone else that they were not viscious beasts that would just as soon eat you as sit for you. Monday came around and Murphey came home with us. In the time since then- one month, to be exact- Murphey has wriggled his way not only into Andy's heart, but the hearts of an entire college campus. It is unfortunate that in the time spent in the pound, plus whatever life he led before he was abandoned, Murphey developed severe separation anxiety. Therefore, he has been attending college classes and doing very well for someone his age! We also had some trouble with re-house training, as the pound he was at only let the dogs out for ten minutes every day. However, that has been, for the most part, overcome. It will just take time and patience.
For anyone considering adopting a dog from the pound, please don't shut your hearts and minds if the dog is either a purebred or mixed pit bull. These can be the sweetest dogs. All they need is love and the proper training, like any dog. Take each animal one at a time, the same way you take each person one at a time rather than stereotyping them. It could be the best choice you ever make.
