TJO May Update (April 24)Cities On Right Track Chairman Tom Haberlin conducted the Supervisory Board's meeting with a very positive announcement, namely, the cities' have narrowed their site selection for the new shelter. His first choice appears to be a 12.5 acre lot on Fuller Road, in Chicopee, Ma. Chairman Haberlin stated that it was visible, and located close to the Mass. Turnpike. An onsite inspection will be undertaken on Friday, April 27th, with the assistance of Steve Jensen(architect of the MSPCA in Springfield). The second choice appears to be a parcel of land located on the grounds of Holyoke Community College. This choice is interesting because it will allow students in the Veterinarian Technician Program at the college to assist in actual animal care. The third choice is a site in the industrial park area of Springfield off Cottage Street. A final decision will more than likely be made before the next Supervisory Board Meeting on May 31st, 2001. The search for an architect with experience in animal sheltering will be discussed at this time. A special legislative funding initiative has been filed to appropriate 3.5 million dollars for the new animal shelter. Although this bill may have a limited chance of passing, it still reflects the sentiments of most of the public that the State should help with the shelter's relocation. A special thanks to the offices of Representatives Wagner, Petrolatti, Buoniconti, Asselin, and Rivera for taking this leadership role.
