TJO August Updates

Mayor Kos of Chicopee has appointed the 13-member Board of Alderman "en masse" to help find a site for the animal control center in order to make room for a women’s prison. The women’s jail forces the relocation of the regional dog pound now used by Chicopee, Holyoke, Springfield, West Springfield, Granby, Southampton and Hampden.

Advisory Board

Alderman James Tillitson appointed to represent Chicopee and Veronica Johns appointed to represent Springfield.

Canine Crisis Alert at TJO

Historically, during summer months things "heat up" at the center. The number of impounded dogs double, often triple in numbers, stressing staff and volunteers to the max. The weekend of 8/5/00 – 50 dogs were taken in, bringing the number of impounded dogs to 105. Every cage was filled. With no room left, only adoptions or rescues can save dogs from euthanasia. (Please visit T.J. O’Connor's site for shelter hours and available dogs.)

Responsible pet ownership is our only hope to bring down euthanasia numbers. Neuter and spay your pets. Make sure they are collared with an identification tag and current information. Don’t leave your pets life up to chance – the numbers are against them.
